Check Open Cloud thumbnail error handling before October 26
Two user-thumbnail endpoints will return completed operations with errors for broken or unapproved images. Check the error before reading the image URL.
Roblox will change failure responses for two Open Cloud endpoints on October 26, 2026: Generate User Thumbnail and Get User Thumbnail Generation Operation. Broken or unapproved thumbnails will return HTTP 200 with done: true and an error object instead of response. Genuine service outages will still return HTTP 503. The September 23 staff announcement warns that integrations assuming every completed operation contains response.imageUri need updating.
A completed request may have no image
This matters if your website, dashboard or community tool uses these endpoints to display user avatars. A successful HTTP request will no longer establish that an image was produced. The announcement concerns these two endpoints, not every Roblox thumbnail API.
Fix the handler, then test four outcomes
Our recommendation is to find the code that turns a thumbnail operation into an image URL. Give it four explicit outcomes: still processing, completed with an image, completed with an error, and request failure. Check the operation’s error before reading its image response.
Show a neutral placeholder when there is no usable image. Keep the surrounding page functional, and log enough context to investigate without showing technical error text to players.
Before deployment, test the handler with a successful thumbnail, an unfinished operation, a completed error and a service failure. Confirm that the completed-error case neither crashes rendering nor repeatedly enters the service-outage retry path.
Assign the migration to someone and release it before October 26. After deployment, review unavailable images separately from service outages so an avatar problem does not hide a genuine integration failure.
