Roblox requires custom thumbnails for homepage recommendations
Roblox now requires a custom thumbnail for homepage recommendation eligibility. Check your games for default-only artwork and upload an accurate replacement.
Roblox has made custom thumbnails a requirement for homepage recommendations, effective October 19, 2026. In its October 19, 2026 announcement, Roblox says games using only default artwork will no longer receive recommendation impressions on Home. Developers need at least one custom thumbnail that represents their game accurately.
Eligibility is not guaranteed exposure
According to Roblox, placeholder images leave players without enough context to decide whether to play. The new rule makes custom artwork an eligibility condition, not just a presentation choice. Uploading it satisfies this thumbnail requirement; it does not guarantee recommendation placement or more traffic.
The announcement also draws a boundary around the change: players who have already played a game can still see it in their Continue sort, even if it uses a default thumbnail. Our recommendation is to treat this as a discovery-readiness check rather than assume all Home visibility has been removed.
Audit and replace default artwork
We'd start by reviewing your live games this week for default-only thumbnails. In the Creator Dashboard, choose a game, open Configure, then Places, and select a place. Open Thumbnails and review the Home Page and Game Detail Page tabs. Upload the replacement and save your changes.
Roblox specifies a 16:9 image, ideally 1920×1080 pixels, and supports .jpg, .gif, .png, .tga, and .bmp files. At least one custom thumbnail is required, with up to five allowed. Images must follow Roblox Community Standards and Discovery best practices. Our recommendation is to choose artwork showing recognizable gameplay, then check the saved listing against what a new player will actually encounter.
